CITIZENS ACADEMY GUIDE
Is your community planning to offer a citizens’ academy or neighborhood college? You're in good company, as more and more communities are turning to these training programs to help promote informed and involved citizenship. Communities that have implemented successful programs range in size from Aberdeen (population 4,064) to Charlotte (population 625,469).

Drawing on the experiences of your counterparts in these communities, this guide is intended to help you get your own program up and running as smoothly as possible. Managers, assistants, public information officers, and other key staff members have shared sample agendas and activities as well as the more specific details of what works and what doesn’t work. Key aspects of the research, as well as contact information for these academy coordinators, are contained in a Microsoft© Excel® comparison table. The members of the Civic Education Subcommittee of the North Carolina City and County Management Association hope you will use this research to design a program that’s a perfect fit for your community.

Please click on the headings below to skip ahead to specific topics, or click “Next” at the bottom of each section to continue in sequence.
