Due to an increase in-demand and the speed at which changes are happening, we are now offering two live webinars on Wednesday, March 18th, one at 10:00 am and one at 2:00 pm. The 10:00 am option is full, but you can register for the 2:00 pm version of the webinar here.

If you can't watch either live version of the webinar, you can register for the on-demand version here. It will be available for viewing on Thursday, March 19.

The new coronavirus is here and it looks like it will spread widely. What should local governments be doing? Join School of Government faculty members Jill Moore, Norma Houston and Diane Juffras for a two-hour live webinar designed to get you ready.

First, we’ll discuss the disease itself, the public health measures already underway, and those that may be coming. Who has to report cases and to which agencies? What is the difference between quarantine and isolation? What is the difference between a confirmed case, a person under investigation and a person who is being monitored? What measures may public health authorities take if the virus really does become widespread?

Then we'll take a look at the role of emergency management in this crisis. What authority do state and local emergency management have?

Finally, we’ll turn to the workplace. May an employer monitor the health of employees in the workplace? How should an employer treat an employee who becomes infected or one who has been quarantined? Will the Family and Medical Leave Act apply? What about the Americans with Disabilities Act? What will the Fair Labor Standards Act require of employers? And what if employees start refusing to come to work? Maybe they are scared or maybe schools are closed and they need to stay home with their children.

The webinar will finish with a live question-and-answer session. And you will get the opportunity to ask further questions. The answers will be shared with all participants.
